Watercolor Shampoo Purple

Can purple shampoo turn your hair purple if left on for too long?

1
Purple shampoo is designed to neutralize brassy or yellow tones in blonde, gray, or white hair. If left on for too long, it can potentially tint the hair with a purple hue, especially if the hair is porous or damaged. However, this is not the intended use of purple shampoo, and it's recommended to follow the product instructions for the best results. If you accidentally leave purple shampoo on for too long and notice a purple tint, using a clarifying shampoo or seeking professional advice can help correct the color.

Not quite purple-purple, but it can add a bit of a lavender hue if applied to white hair, left on for too long, and used too often. If you simply use it on blonde hair to tone down the brassiness, then you will likely never see even a hint of purple, even if you don’t use as directed.

However, any shampoo left on for too long won’t have the best results for your hair, so just follow the manufacturer’s directions. Now, look, if it says to leave it on for 2 and you do 5, that is not a big deal, but I would never suggest you leave a shampoo on for, say, half an hour, or worse, overnight. Same goes for conditioner. More is definitely not better.

If you leave purple shampoo on for too long, you may find yourself with a little lilac hue. This color is not permanent and is more likely to happen if you have very light blonde hair or if your hair is dry and damaged. To remove the purple hue, switch to regular shampoo for your next few washes.

If it is not colour-depositing, it won't turn your hair purple - even though it might look like it is before you rinse it out! Just remember, the longer you leave it on, and the more often you use it, the more intense the toning will be.

Can you overdo purple shampoo? Keep in mind that purple shampoo does not replace your regular shampoo and should only be used once or twice a week. Doss warns that there is such a thing as too much purple. “When you eliminate too much yellow, it visually ends up darker and a lot of people don't want it to look darker,” she says.

The new Viral purple shampoo will definitely turn level 8+ blonde hair purple or lavender, but that it is because it was designed to keep intense purple shades purple. It recommends right on the package not to use it on undyed or blonde hair. Now, more conventional purple or blue shampoos or conditioners on the other hand, will generally not turn hair purple. Exceptions to this would be extremely porous hair that has been bleached to white or nearly so, or if left on fairly light hair, will cool it off pretty significantly, almost too much so.
